Christian Democrat Kai Wegner has been the governing mayor of Berlin since the end of April. Wegner is a native Berliner. He was born in 1972 to a retail saleswoman and a construction worker in what was then West Berlin. He joined the CDU in 1989 at the age of 17 and became a member of the Junge Union in Spandau. Between 1994 and 1997, he trained as an insurance salesman.
