Sepsis is the body's extreme reaction to an infection. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Any type of infection can lead to sepsis. These include bacterial, viral or fungal infections. Infections that lead to sepsis most commonly start in the lungs, urinary tract, skin or gastrointestinal tract. The sepsis acrostic is a simple and helpful way to remember some of the signs and symptoms. The symptoms of sepsis: chills, fever or feeling very cold Extreme pain or discomfort Pale or discolored skin Drowsy, hard to wake, confusion "I feel like I might die" Shortness of breath. Some people with sepsis experience long-term physical and psychological problems.
