'Joker: Folie à Deux", the sequel to the comic adaptation, disappointed with a box office gross of $40 million at the US box office. The anti-hero musical mix by director Todd Phillips made less than half of the original "Joker" on its opening, despite production costs being three times higher. The film also became the first Hollywood comic adaptation to receive a D-cinema rating as audiences were dissatisfied with the film. Led by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film was originally expected to gross at least $50 to $60 million. Phillips' "Joker" film from 2019 grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide, despite its budget being only $55 million. Poor reviews and negative word of mouth seem to be the main reasons for the disappointing box office performance of the sequel. Despite the film's poor performance at the box office, Warner Bros insiders say that Phillips is a creative genius and worth betting on.
