Sandstorm on highway in Hungary: Nineteen vehicles in flames!

A pile-up on the M1 from Budapest towards Vienna yesterday required a large contingent of rescue workers. More than forty vehicles were involved in the accident on the M1. In the Bicske region, at kilometer 30 of the M1 freeway in the direction of Győr/Vienna, 32 cars, five vans and five trucks crashed into each other at around 14:45. Within the pile-up, a fire ignited within seconds. Nineteen passenger cars, one van and one truck caught fire among the vehicles. In the other direction, on the side leading to Budapest, two cars also collided, but these vehicles did not burn out. Seventy firefighters from seven cities were deployed : in addition to the firefighters, the region's civil protection intervention teams also arrived. Four rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances and emergency doctors were alerted to the highway. According to the first information from the police, 36 people were injured, thirteen people suffered serious injuries and one person was critically injured. The highway sections were fully closed in both directions until late at night. In the meantime, the road has been cleared and is passable again. According to initial information, the accident was caused by a sandstorm on the highway.
