Lawyer of the rape accuser files motion to dismiss Jay-Z's defamation lawsuit
In a hearing before a California court, Jay-Z's lawyers and attorney Tony Buzbee argued over Jay-Z's extortion and defamation lawsuit. Jay-Z, born as Shawn Carter, alleges that Buzbee tried to extort him by threatening to name him in a rape case if he did not agree to a secret settlement. When Carter refused, Buzbee allegedly added him to a lawsuit by a woman accusing Carter and Sean 'Diddy' Combs of raping her at an afterparty in 2000. Buzbee denies any wrongdoing and argues that the woman authorized the demand letter and had the right to seek a private settlement. He is now trying to dismiss Carter's lawsuit, claiming the case is a form of legal intimidation. At the center of the dispute is a conversation recorded in February between the woman and two private detectives hired by Carter. She allegedly says Buzbee 'pressured' her to incriminate Carter. Buzbee argues that the conversation is inadmissible and should be excluded; Carter's team insists it is legal and crucial evidence of a conspiracy. Judge Mark Epstein said he will review the recording before deciding on the motion to dismiss the case. Carter's lawyer described Buzbee's actions as 'criminal' and accused him of wanting to ruin Carter's reputation for money. Buzbee's lawyer countered that Carter was using his power to punish lawyers and silence accusers. Carter first sued Buzbee last year under a pseudonym. He has since filed another defamation lawsuit against the woman in Alabama, which Buzbee also seeks to dismiss.
