Scientists discover new antibiotic for treating gonorrhea

Scientists have developed the first new antibiotic for treating gonorrhea since the 1990s, offering new hope in the face of growing concerns about untreatable strains. Gepotidacin, an oral antibiotic already used to treat urinary tract infections, is an effective treatment for gonorrhea, even against strains resistant to current treatments. In a study published in 'The Lancet' with 622 patients, the pill achieved the same efficacy as the injected standard antibiotic ceftriaxone. The increase in antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea has raised fears that the infection could soon become untreatable. The UK health authority recently reported a record 85,000 cases of gonorrhea in 2023, with the number of drug-resistant cases sharply rising. Researchers believe that treating with tablets could improve patient experiences and reduce the burden on healthcare. However, experts warn that resistance to gepotidacin could develop over time, emphasizing the need for continuous drug development. They also stress the importance of prevention, especially as the study mainly focused on white males, calling for further research in broader populations.
