Researchers at the University of Zurich have found that many employees in certain industries perceive their work as socially useless. The study revealed that workers in finance, sales, and management professions are most likely to consider their work as useless. The "BS-Jobs Theory" developed by anthropologist David Graeber states that certain jobs are objectively useless. However, scientists have proposed the theory that many people perceive their work as useless more due to administrative grievances than the actual work itself. For their investigation, they analyzed data from a survey conducted by 1,811 individuals in the USA across 21 different professions. They were asked whether their work made them feel like they were "having a positive impact on the community and society" and "doing useful work". 19% of respondents, spread across a wide range of professions, answered "never" or "rarely".
