The new Audi A6 Avant - Extensive tuning work - How it is assessed

During simulations on the computer and comprehensive test drives, subjective and objective assessment criteria are taken into account. There are basic measurements that must be met, but not everything can be proven with mere numbers, but also and above all by the subjective assessment of experienced Audi developers. Feedback on steering, steering effort, lane-keeping in certain driving situations such as ABS braking from different speeds and different coefficients of friction - such as aquaplaning, smoothness, and high grip - for example, form the criteria for assessment. Also tested on rough roads with transverse joints and longitudinal grooves: the vehicle must remain stable here, cushion and dampen pleasantly. "With large road undulations, we ensure that the jounce and rebound movements proceed very harmoniously," explains chassis developer Knauer. "This way, the new A6 seems to float over the road, especially with the comfortable air suspension." In addition, high-speed tests and handling course drives help to precisely calibrate the stability and precision of the steering. Audi defines controlled driving behavior, among other things, by precise and predictable cornering behavior. In load change situations, the A6 Avant reacts, for example, more comfortably and less agile due to its design concept than a model whose focus is purely on sportiness, although each vehicle must meet specified targets and set values. In addition, the A6 Avant is characterized by its good maneuverability at low speeds in city traffic and stable straight-line stability at high speeds on the highway.
